The shaft is a square metal bar which connects the door handles on each side of your door. If it is too little for your lock, the knob will rattle and there’s little you can do to mend it.  it is irrelevant so much if a spindle is too large. You can file off some of the shaft, or open out the lock.  Grub screws / Set Screws : Are all of them there and do they turn? Screws on old knobs could have strange threads so can be tough to replace. If you have got to replace one, it is typically better to drill it out and re-thread it to a modern metric thread. And you know you can replace the screw if you lose it.  General wear : some surface wear makes an old knob look like it’s been in place for years, so don’t write off an antique door knobs just for being perfect.
